Happy Wednesday!
Did you know that since the FIFA World Cup began in 1930, only 8 countries have won it? It’s the most viewed event in the world, with more than half of the world’s population tuning in!
Here’s what we’ve got this week:

ANIMAL FOCUS
Grizzly Bears 🐻
Grizzly bears can smell food from more than 15 miles away! Their noses are packed with special receptors, giving them a sense of smell 2,000 times stronger than humans and 7 times stronger than a bloodhound! They can even smell food buried under snow or hidden inside cars and campsites. 👃
They can run faster than Usain Bolt! Bolt’s top speed was 27 mph. Even though they can weigh over 700 pounds, grizzlies can sprint up to 35 mph! 👟
Baby grizzlies are born while their mom is sleeping for the winter! When they’re born, they’re blind, hairless, and toothless. They stay warm by snuggling with their mom, and will grow to about 8 pounds before they leave the den. 🍼
Adult grizzlies rarely climb trees. Their heavy bodies and long claws make climbing too hard, especially as they get older. 🌳
Grizzlies are a keystone species! They help keep nature healthy and balanced by eating and spreading seeds wherever they go. They can walk up to 40 miles a day and roam an area of 600 square miles looking for food! 🌱

EVER WONDER?
How is oil turned into gas? ⛽
What is oil? ⚫
Oil is a dark liquid found deep underground. People use it to make gasoline, plastics, polyester, and many other useful products. It’s one of the world’s major energy sources.
How do we get oil? 🛢️
Geologists use satellites and sound waves to look for oil underground.
Sometimes oil collects in large underground reservoirs. Workers drill deep into the ground and pump the oil back up, like using a straw to drink from a juice box.
More often, oil is trapped in tiny spaces inside rock, like water in a sponge. To release it, water and sand are pumped into the rock at high pressure. This process is called fracking.
How is oil turned into gasoline? ⛽
Oil is heated to about 700°F and sent into a tall tower called a distillation column. Because different parts of the oil heat up and boil at different temperatures, they separate into different layers.
Some of these other layers become:
Propane
Jet fuel
Diesel
Asphalt
The oil is then further processed using heat, pressure, and chemical reactions. Scientists break large oil molecules into smaller pieces and mix them with other ingredients (like detergents and ethanol) to make the gasoline work better.
A typical barrel of oil (42 gallons) can produce about 20 gallons of gasoline for cars. 🚗
