Grizzly Bears 🐻

Grizzly bears can smell food from more than 15 miles away! Their noses are packed with special receptors, giving them a sense of smell 2,000 times stronger than humans and 7 times stronger than a bloodhound! They can sniff out food buried in snow or hidden in cars and campsites. 👃
They can outrun Usain Bolt! Bolt’s top speed was 27 mph. Even though they can weigh over 700 pounds, grizzlies can sprint up to 35 mph! 👟
Their shoulder hump is pure muscle! It helps them dig and lift with huge strength. One easy way to tell them apart from black bears is that black bears don’t have a hump. 💪
Grizzlies are amazing diggers. Their long 4-inch claws and powerful front legs help them dig up roots, chase underground animals, and make winter dens. They actually dig a new den every year.
Even though they look fierce, grizzlies are mostly vegetarians! About 90% of their food is plants, roots, berries, and nuts. 🥗
Baby grizzlies are born while their mom is sleeping for the winter! When they’re born, they’re blind, hairless, and toothless. They stay warm by snuggling with their mom, and will grow to about 8 pounds before they leave the den. 🍼
Grizzlies don’t fully hibernate. Instead, they enter a deep sleep (torpor) where their bodies slow down, but they can quickly wake up if needed. 🛌
Adult grizzlies rarely climb trees. Their heavy bodies and long claws make climbing too hard, especially as they get older. 🌳
Grizzlies are a keystone species! They keep the whole ecosystem healthy by spreading seeds as they walk. They can walk up to 40 miles a day and roam an area of 600 square miles looking for food! 🌱
Grizzly bears come in many colors! They can be blond, gray, brown, or almost black. Their name comes from their silver-tipped hairs, which makes them look ‘grizzled.’ 🐻
