Happy Wednesday!

Skunks 🦨
Skunks can spray like a water gun! They can spray 5-6 times in a row and hit a target up to 15 feet away! A skunk can store about a teaspoon of spray, and if it runs out, it may take up to 2 weeks to completely refill. 🔫
They might do a handstand to warn you! Skunks don’t want to waste their spray (they’re defenseless if they run out!), so they usually give a warning first. They may stomp their feet, raise their tail, or even do a handstand. Often this is enough to scare predators away! ⚠️
They have poor eyesight. Skunks rely more on their sense of smell and hearing than their vision. They often have trouble seeing things that are more than 10 feet away, but they can see better at night than during the day. 👀
Not all skunks are black and white! Some skunks have spots, some have thin stripes, and some are almost entirely white. Their bright markings warn predators to stay away! 🚨
Some skunks are surprisingly good climbers! Most skunks are not great climbers, but spotted skunks are excellent. They can easily climb trees and fences and can even climb down trees headfirst! 🌳

EVER WONDER?
How does noise-cancelling work? 🎧
What are sound waves? 🔊
If you throw a rock into a pond, it creates ripples in the water.
In the same way, loud sounds create ripples in the air. These ripples are called sound waves.
Louder sounds create bigger waves, while high-pitched sounds make faster waves. We can’t see these waves because air is invisible, but we can hear them!
How do noise-cancelling headphones work? 🎧
Noice-cancelling headphones work in two ways:
Passive noise reduction 👂
The headphones are designed to make a tight seal around your ears, helping block outside sounds.
Active noise cancellation 🔇
Your headphones have tiny microphones that listen to the sounds around you.
These sounds are turned into electric signals.
The headphones create signals that are the opposite of those sounds. (It’s like creating a second set of ripples that is exactly opposite to the first, so they cancel each other out.)
These opposite signals help cancel the surrounding sounds. The sounds may not disappear completely, but they become much quieter.

P.S. Little brown bats sleep 19.9 hours a day, more than thick-tailed opossums (19.4 hours), giant armadillos (18.1 hours), arctic ground squirrels (16.6 hours, or tigers (15.8 hours)!
