5 FACTS

Flamingos: extreme survivors? 🦩

Flamingos may look delicate, but they’re tough! Here are 5 facts that might surprise you:

  1. Flamingos are extreme survivors - they live in places most animals can’t. At Lake Natron in East Africa, the water can reach 140°F! They have tough heat-resistant tissues to protect their mouths so they can drink the boiling water, and salt glands near their eyes to remove excess salt. 🌡️

  2. Flamingo knees don’t bend backwards. Their real knees are hidden under their feathers. What you see is their ankle. They also have special leg muscles which lets them stand on one leg without using any energy. 🦵

  3. Flamingos produce red “crop milk.” Both parents take turns feeding the chicks to help them grow fast. 🍼

  4. Flamingo colonies can have over 1 million birds and are among the largest bird colonies on Earth. They can be seen from miles away! Yet each bird has a unique call, so mates and chicks don’t get lost! 🦩

  5. Flamingos build tall, volcano-shaped mud nests. These keep the eggs safe from heat and flooding. 🌋

DID YOU KNOW?

Do I really sound like that?? 🎧

Ever hear a recording of yourself and cringe?

That’s because you hear your voice two ways:

  • Through the air (like everyone else) 🔊

  • Through vibrations in your skull and bones 🦴

Your bones conduct low-frequency sounds, which makes your voice sound deeper, warmer, and fuller to you, just like a natural bass boost!

Recordings only capture what is transmitted through the air, so your voice sounds higher and thinner than you expect.

That mismatch is why hearing recordings of yourself feels so uncomfortable. 😬

PICK OF THE WEEK

Why coffee makes you poop ☕

Hint: it’s not the caffeine!

Fun coffee facts:

  • 66% of Americans drink about 3 cups a day

  • That’s over 500 million cups nationwide every day! ☕☕☕

  • Coffee “beans” are actually seeds from a fruit 🌼

  • Legend says that coffee was discovered by an Ethiopian goat herder with hyperactive goats 🐐
