TRIVIA OF THE WEEK

(Explanation at the end!)

5 FACTS

Sea otters: the cutest keystone species? 🦦

Not only are they cute, but they maintain the entire ecosystem!

  1. Sea otter pups are one of the few mammals born with their eyes open! This helps them navigate the dangerous ocean. 🦦

  2. They have the densest fur on Earth - up to 1 million hairs per square inch, or 20 times more hair than a cat! 🪮

  3. When resting, they lift their flippers, tails, and paws out of the water to keep them dry and to stay warm. 🌊

  4. They use rocks as tools to break open shells when eating - and even store their favorite rocks in loose skin pockets! 🪨

  5. Their whiskers can grow up to 8 inches long and are sensitive enough to detect tiny water vibrations to help them hunt in murky water. 🤿

DID YOU KNOW?

Why don’t birds fall when they sleep? 🦉

Birds have a built-in locking system.

When they bend their legs to perch, tendons in their legs automatically tighten to lock their toes around the branch.

The more they bend their legs and relax, the tighter the grip becomes.

No muscles required.

Many birds also sleep with half their brain awake - so they can balance and watch for danger, even while resting!
