5 FACTS

Camels: extreme desert survivors 🐪

Camels are built for some of the harshest places on Earth:

  1. They can drink up to 50 gallons of water in minutes thanks to special blood cells that expand without bursting! 🩸

  2. They can raise their body temperature by up to 12°F in a single day to avoid sweating and losing water. 🌡️

  3. When they walk, their feet spread to nearly twice their size, like sand snowshoes, to keep them from sinking. ⛱️

  4. During sandstorms, camels close their nostrils completely and use three eyelids and double eyelashes to protect their eyes. They can even survive losing up to 25% of their body water! 👁️

  5. They eat thorny plants and can drink saltwater that even some ocean animals wouldn’t survive, thanks to powerful kidneys and tough, armored mouths (their mouths are lined with the same material as our fingernails)! 🌿

DID YOU KNOW?

Why onions make you cry 🧅

Onions use a sneaky chemical defense:

  1. Cutting onions breaks their cells open, causing chemicals to mix

  2. These chemicals create a gas (syn-propanethial-S-oxide)

  3. This gas reacts with moisture in your eyes to create a mild acid (sulfuric acid)

  4. Your eyes make tears to wash it out

The onion wins 😭
