ANIMAL FOCUS

Woodpeckers 🐦‍⬛

  1. Woodpeckers can hammer with a force up to 1,500 times stronger than gravity! Some can peck up to 40 times every second. Most animals would get a brain injury from impacts that strong. 🔨

  2. Their tongue wraps around their skull! A woodpecker’s tongue can stretch 4-5 inches long and wraps around the back of its skull. This may help cushion its brain while pecking. 👅

  3. They have special shock-absorbing bones! Scientists think woodpeckers may protect their brains with spongy skull bones absorb impact like a bicycle helmet. Their brains also fit very tightly inside their skulls, which helps reduce movement during pecking. ⛑️

  4. Acorn woodpeckers can store 50,000 acorns in a single tree! They place each acorn in its own hole to keep other animals from stealing it. They also have an excellent memory and can remember where they hid their food. 🌳

  5. Woodpeckers can hear insects moving inside trees! Their tongues are covered with sticky saliva, helping them pull insects out from deep inside the wood. 🪲

  6. They have special feet for climbing trees! Two toes point forward and two point backward for a strong grip. Their stiff tail feathers act like a third leg for support. 🐦‍⬛

  7. Not all woodpeckers peck wood! Some peck cacti, utility poles, or even houses. Others, like the Northern Flicker, peck the ground! 🪵

  8. Part of a woodpecker’s beak is always growing! The outer layer is made of keratin, the same material found in human fingernails. As the woodpecker pecks, the beak keeps growing and sharpening. Tiny stiff feathers also protect its nostrils from dust. 🐦

  9. They communicate by drumming. Instead of singing, woodpeckers tap on trees or even metal gutters to send messages. Some species also make rattling or chattering sounds. 🥁

  10. Woodpeckers create homes for other animals! Owls, bluebirds, falcons, bats, squirrels, mice, and even ducks often live in abandoned woodpecker nests. 🦉
