ANIMAL FOCUS

Weasels 🐿️

  1. Weasels are amazing athletes! They can run up to 15 mph, which is super fast for such small animals (most weasels are only 7-14 inches long). They can also jump up to 6 feet in one leap! 🏃

  2. They’re always hungry! Weasels use so much energy that they have to eat half their body weight every day! If they skip a meal, they can get weak very quickly. 🍽️

  3. They can change colors in winter! Some weasels turn white in winter to blend in with the snow. The tip of their tail stays dark so predators can’t tell which end is their head. They also have a great sense of smell and can sniff out prey hiding under the snow. ❄️

  4. They are super flexible! Weasels have long spines, extra vertebrae, no collarbone, and loose ribs. This makes them super bendy, so they can shift into impossible shapes and squeeze through holes as small as a quarter! 🦴

  5. They are fearless hunters! Weasels will hunt animals 10 times bigger than they are, including rabbits! Sometimes they do a crazy zig-zag dance called the weasel war dance to confuse their prey. 🐰

  6. Weasels are great climbers. They can climb trees almost as well as squirrels. Their sharp claws work like tiny grappling hooks. 🌳

  7. They are burrow thieves. Weasels don’t dig their own homes. Instead, they take over burrows from other animals. They can remember huge tunnel systems and always know where the nearest exit is. 🏠

  8. They have a screaming defense. When scared or attacked, some weasels let out a high-pitched scream that surprises predators long enough for them to escape. 📣

  9. They’re silent stalkers. Weasels have soft, padded feet that help them walk quietly, even on crunchy leaves. They can also freeze completely still for minutes while sneaking up on prey. 🍁

  10. They have night vision and lightning reflexes! Their eyes reflect light, giving them great night vision. They also have super-fast reflexes that are even faster than cats! ⚡️
