Sperm Whales 🐳

Sperm whales are one of the largest animals on earth, but here’s some facts you might not have known about these apex predators:

Right: Napping Sperm whales

  1. They have the largest brain on Earth! Their brains can weigh up to 20 pounds! That’s big, but still small compared to their huge bodies (adults can weigh up to 110,000 pounds). 🧠

  2. They are the loudest animals on Earth! They make clicks up to 230 decibels (that’s 100 decibels louder than a jet engine)! These sounds can even stun their prey! 🔊

  3. Their heads are huge for a reason. Inside is a special organ called the spermaceti organ. It’s filled with a waxy material to help focus sound. They use it to send out clicks like sonar to “see” in the dark ocean. 🔦

  4. They can dive deeper than most submarines! They can go at least 7,000 feet down to hunt for giant and colossal squids. They dive so deep that their lungs collapse to handle the pressure! ⚓

  5. They can hold their breath for more than an hour! They save oxygen by slowing their heart rate and can stay underwater for up to 90 minutes! 🫁

  6. Sperm whales only have teeth on their lower jaw. Their teeth fit into spaces in their upper jaw, and they can swallow food whole without chewing. 🦷

  7. They sleep “standing up.” They float upright in the water, like tall pillars. Seeing entire groups of them napping together is quite the sight! 😴

  8. Their poop helps fight climate change! It has important nutrients like iron that help tiny ocean plants called phytoplankton grow. These plants help remove carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air. 💩

  9. Sperm whales are highly social and live in groups led by females. The females and their babies stay together and help protect each other. Adult male sperm whales usually live on their own. 🐳

  10. Their hearts can weigh up to 275 pounds! These strong hearts help pump blood during deep, high-pressure dives. ❤️
