Secretary birds 🐦‍⬛

Shoutout to Corey, who requested secretary birds!

  1. They can kill venomous cobras with super-fast kicks and stomps! Secretary birds can react and kick in less than 15 milliseconds, which is faster than the blink of an eye. Their powerful kicks can crush a snake’s skull. They also eat insects, rodents, and other small animals. 🐍

  2. They have huge wings but spend most of their time walking. Even though their wings can stretch more than 7 feet wide, they often walk up to 20 miles a day while searching for food! 👟

  3. They have very long eyelashes! Their “eyelashes” are actually special, stiff feathers that help protect their eyes from dust when they case prey through dry grasslands. 👁️

  4. Their legs are built like armor! Their legs are covered with thick, tough scales that help protect them from snake bites. 🛡️

  5. They are one of the tallest birds of prey in the world! Secretary birds can grow up to 5 feet tall! 📏

  6. They are surprisingly fast! Secretary birds can run up to 12 mph and fly up to 50 mph! They can also jump while attacking to make their kicks even stronger. 💨

  7. Their name may come from old-fashioned office workers. The feathers on the back of their heads look a little like quill pens that secretaries used to tuck behind their ears. 🪶

  8. They swallow their prey whole! Secretary birds eat rodents, insects, lizards, and even small birds without chewing them first! 🐭

  9. Their nests keep getting bigger every year! They add more sticks to the same nest year after year. After several years, a nest can become several feet wide and large enough for the whole family. 🪺

  10. They can handle very hot weather! Secretary birds live in Africa, where temperatures can get very high. Their long legs help keep their bodies farther away from the hot ground. ☀️
