Sea Turtles 🐢

  1. Sea turtles are experienced travelers! They can sense Earth’s magnetic field, use sunlight to steer, and remember currents and ocean routes for decades. Leatherback turtles travel more than 10,000 miles per trip to reach their favorite feeding spots! 🗺️

  2. Their shells are very sensitive! A turtle’s shell is made of over 50 bones and packed with nerves so they can feel pressure and even gentle scratches. Algae often grow on their shells, which small fish sometimes nibble on. 🐟

  3. Sea turtles are a keystone species and help keep the ocean healthy. They eat lots of jellyfish (their favorite food!) and trim seagrass beds. Their thick skin protects them from jellyfish stings, and their strong sense of smell helps them find food. 🪼

  4. The temperature decides their gender! Warm sand (above 89°F) makes more female hatchlings. Because the climate is warming, many nests are producing all girls, which is risky for future turtle populations. 🏖️

  5. They can hold their breath up to 7 hours! They can slow their heart rate to stay underwater for long stretches when resting! 🤿

  6. Sea turtles have great night vision! Their big pupils help them see in the dark, but bright lights can confuse them. They can’t see red light well, so red lights are safer around hatchlings. 🚨

  7. They’re silent swimmers! Their flippers are shaped to cut through water smoothly when they glide, but they can still speed up to 22 mph when they want to! 🐢

  8. They “cry” salt. Because they drink seawater, special glands near their eyes remove the extra salt, making it look like they’re crying. 🧂

  9. Some turtles grow bigger than humans! The largest leatherback ever found was 10 feet long and weighed over 2,000 pounds. Leatherbacks have flexible shells that work like a giant rubber shield. 🛡️

  10. Sea turtles communicate underwater. They make low-frequency sounds humans can’t hear, sending vibrations through the water to each other. 💬
