Amazon River Dolphins 🐬🩷

Amazon river dolphins (also called botos) are famous for their pink color. Here are some cool facts you might not know:

  1. Botos aren’t born pink! They’re born gray, but turn pinker as they get older. Males usually end up more pink than females!

  2. Their neck bones aren’t fused like ocean dolphins, so they can twist their heads almost 90 degrees! This helps them swim around branches and roots in narrow river channels.

  3. They have two types of teeth! They have sharp teeth for grabbing fish and flat molars for crunching turtles and crabs. No other dolphin has both kinds of teeth!

  4. They actually blush! When they get excited or playful, more blood flows to their skin and makes them turn brighter pink!

  5. Male botos love to show off! They’ve been seeing carrying sticks, rocks, or clumps of grass and waving them around to get attention and impress others!

  6. They can swim upside down! They often swim upside down so they can see better in the muddy water and spot fish hiding below them.

  7. Even though the Amazon is super muddy, they use echolocation to “see” through the water and find fish hiding in mud or roots.

  8. They have tiny eyes but big brains. Their eyes are small and not very strong, but their brains are about 40% bigger than a human’s!

  9. They eat almost anything! They have one of the largest diets of all whales, including 53 kinds of fish (even piranhas!), turtles, frogs, and crabs.

  10. They’re pretty big! Adult males can weigh up to 400 pounds! The oldest known boto lived to be 32 years old.
