Rhinos 🦏

Did you know that a group of rhinos is called a crash? Here are some more fun rhino facts:

  1. Unlike cows or antelope, rhino horns have no bone! Rhino horns are made of keratin, the same stuff as your hair and fingernails. Baby rhinos are born with no horn at all! Their horns don’t start growing until they’re a few months old. 🦴

  2. Rhinos run faster than a person on a bike! They can sprint up to 34 mph, and they can even gallop with all four feet off the ground! 🚴

  3. They leave messages in their poop! Rhinos make about 45 pounds of poop every day! From the poop smell, rhinos can figure out which other rhinos are in the area! 💩

  4. There are only two Northern white rhinos left on Earth! And they aren’t actually white. Their name comes from the Afrikaans word wyd which means “wide” (referring to their wide mouths). 🦏

  5. They have bird bodyguards! Oxpecker birds sit on their backs, eat bugs off their skin, and shout loud warnings when danger is close! 🦜

  6. Indian rhinos are great swimmers! They love the water and use their flexible upper lips to grab and eat plants while swimming! 💧

  7. Their “armor” isn’t real armor! What looks like armor is just thick, folded skin. Even though it can be 2 inches thick, it’s still sensitive enough to feel tiny bug bites. 🛡️

  8. Rhinos make lots of sounds sounds, including grunts, snorts, growls, pants, squeaks, moos, and even trumpet screams to talk to each other! 🔈

  9. Rhinos are huge plant-eaters! Some grow up to 6 feet tall and weigh more than 5,000 pounds! They can eat 150 pounds of grass a day, and Indian rhinos munch on at least 180 kinds of plants! 🥗

  10. They don’t see very well, but they have an amazing sense of smell and hearing! And even though they look tough, most rhinos would rather eat than fight. 🕊️
