Poison dart frogs 🐸

Poison dart frogs are famous for being used in Central and South America to make very effective (and dangerous!) blow darts. Here are some facts you might not know:

  1. They’re some of the most poisonous animals on Earth! One golden poison frog has enough toxin to kill up to 10-20 people! ☠️

  2. Even though they’re poisonous, they never attack. Their poison is only used to protect them from predators. ☮️

  3. Their poison comes from what they eat. They get poisons by eating certain ants, termites, and mites. When they live in captivity and eat different food, they can become completely harmless. 🐜

  4. They come in bright colors! Instead of hiding, poison dart frogs are bright blue, yellow, red, or green. These bright colors warn predators: “Don’t eat me!” ⚠️

  5. Not all poison dart frogs are deadly. There are over 170 species. Some are only a little poisonous, and some are completely harmless. 🐸

  6. Their poison affects nerves and muscles. It blocks signals between nerves and muscles, which can cause paralysis and even stop the heart. 🦽

  7. They’re amazing climbers! They have special toe pads that act like tiny suction cups. This helps them climb leaves, branches, and even smooth surfaces to escape predators. 🧗‍♂️

  8. They’re great parents! Parents carry their tadpoles on their backs to water and even provide food and ongoing care. 👪

  9. They don’t croak like other frogs. Instead, they make soft sounds like trills, buzzes, or chirps. Each species has its own unique sound. 🎵

  10. They’re tiny! Most poison dart frogs are only 1-2 inches long. The smallest are about half an inch, and even the biggest are only about 2.5 inches long. 📏

How are poison dart frogs such good climbers?
  • Sticky toe pads: Their toes have tiny structures that increase the surface area and help them stick to surfaces, like mini suction cups. 🪠

  • Mucus: Their toe pads have a little bit of moisture that creates surface tension and helps them stick tightly, even to smooth surfaces like glass. 🤧

  • Flexible toes: They can spread their toes wide to grip uneven surfaces and stay balanced. 👣
