Moose 🦌

Moose are amazing swimmers! They can swim as fast as Michael Phelps (about 6 mph) for hours without stopping! In short bursts, they can even reach 10 mph! 🏊
Moose antlers are some of fastest-growing bones on Earth! They can grow up to 1 inch per day during the summer! When moose shed their antlers in winter, the antlers can weigh up to 40 pounds (Alaskan moose antlers can reach 80 pounds)! 🦌
They can sprint up to 35 mph! Their long legs and wide hooves help them avoid sinking in deep snow. Their hooves also act like paddles when they swim. 🏃
They’re surprisingly quiet! Even though moose can weigh up to 1,500 pounds, they’re almost completely silently. Their big hooves soften their steps, and their thin legs let them slip through bushes quietly. Their dark fur also blends in with the forest. 🤫
They can close their nostrils completely! Special muscles shut their noses when they dive so water doesn’t get in. They can dive 20 feet and hold their breath up to 1 minute while eating underwater plants. 👃
Their fur is like a super-warm winter coat! It traps air to keep them warm, even when temperatures drop to –40°F. In fact, their fur is so good at holding heat that moose can become too warm when the temperature rises above 20°F! 🧥
They are fierce fighters! A single moose can easily fight off an entire wolf pack using its antlers and powerful kicks. Moose moms are especially protective and will even charge bears to keep their babies safe. ⚔️
They don’t have upper front teeth! Moose eat up to 70 pounds of bark, twigs, and plants each day. Since they don’t have upper front teeth, they use their lips to pinch plants and tear them off. 🦷
Moose are great motion detectors! Moose don’t see well, but they are great at spotting movement. They can notice tiny movements in thick forests. They also use their strong sense of smell and hearing to stay alert. 👀
The plural of moose is moose! The word comes from an Algonquian Native American language that didn’t follow the old rules that changed goose to geese! 📚
