Horses 🐴

What’s your favorite horse fact?

  1. Horses can’t burp, vomit, or breathe through their mouths! Their stomachs have a strong one-way valve that ensures food only goes down, never back up. 🐴

  2. Their teeth take up more space in their skull than their brain! Horses have huge teeth because they need to grind tough grasses for hours every day. Their brains weigh less than 1.5 pounds! 🦷

  3. Horses have nearly 360° vision! Because their eyes are on the sides of their head, they can see almost all the way around themselves! They only have two small blind spots: directly behind them, and right in front of their nose. They have the largest eyes of any land mammal! 👀

  4. Arabian horses have fewer bones than other horses! Most horses have 205 bones, but Arabian horses only have 203. They’re missing a rib and have a shorter back than most other horses. 🦴

  5. Some horses (especially Gypsy Vanneers) grow mustaches! This helps them feel for grass when it’s dark. 🥸

  6. Horses can sleep standing up! They have special tendons and ligaments called a “stay apparatus” that help them lock their legs and relax without falling over. However, they still need to lie down for REM sleep. 😴

  7. They produce up to 10 gallons of saliva a day! They have three pairs of salivary glands! All this saliva helps them break down and digest the tough plants they eat. 🪣

  8. The tallest horse ever stood 7 feet tall at its shoulder! Fittingly, it was a horse named Sampson (later renamed Mammoth)! 📏

  9. The oldest horse ever lived to be 62! Most horses live around 25-30 years, so Old Billy was definitely an outlier! He lived from 1760 to 1822 and spent most of his life working, pulling barges along canals. 👴

  10. The first cloned horse, Prometea, was born in 2003! She was born from the same mare she was cloned from, making her and her mom genetically identical. 🧬
