Horses 🐴
What’s your favorite horse fact?
Horses can’t burp or throw up. They can’t even breathe through their mouths! A special one-way valve keeps food moving only downward. 🐴
Their teeth take up more space in their skull than their brain! Horses have big teeth to grind tough grass all day. Their brains weigh less than 1.5 pounds! 🦷
Because their eyes sit on the sides of their heads, horses can see almost all the way around themselves! They only can’t see right in front of their nose or directly behind them. They also have the largest eyes of any land mammal! 👀
Arabian horses have fewer bones than other horses! Most horses have 205 bones, but Arabian horses only have 203. They’re missing a rib and have a shorter back than most other horses. 🦴
Some horses grow mustaches! Certain breeds, like Gypsy Vanners, use them to feel for grass in the dark. 🥸

Horses can sleep standing up! They have special tendons and ligaments called a “stay apparatus” that help them lock their legs and relax without falling over. However, they still need to lie down for REM sleep. 😴
Horses can make up to 10 gallons of spit each day! This helps them chew and digest all the plants they eat. 🪣
The tallest horse was 7 feet tall at its shoulder! Fittingly, it was named Sampson (later renamed Mammoth)! 📏
The oldest horse ever was 62! Most horses live around 25-30 years, so Old Billy was definitely an outlier! He lived from 1760 to 1822 and spent most of his life working, pulling barges along canals. 👴
The first cloned horse, Prometea, was born in 2003! She was born from the same mare she was cloned from, making her and her mom genetically identical. 🧬
