Arctic Foxes 🦊

They can survive temperatures as low as -94°F! They have the warmest fur of any mammal, and it grows much thicker in winter to keep them safe and warm! 🧥
They have the biggest litters of any carnivore! Arctic fox moms often have 5-8 pups, but in areas where there are lots of lemmings, they can have 11 or more. Some litters even have up to 25! Newborn pups weigh about as much as an egg. They’re born blind and completely dependent on their parents to survive. 🍼
A fox family can eat up to 4,000 lemmings in one summer! One litter of 11 pups needs 30-100 lemmings a day to survive (depending on the age of the pups). An arctic fox can hear lemmings under 4-5 inches of snow. Then it jumps into the air and dives nose-first to grab one! 🐭
One arctic fox walked from Norway to Canada! In 2018, it traveled 2,179 miles across sea ice and glaciers in just 76 days. That’s farther than driving from Los Angeles to Chicago! 👟
They are Iceland’s only native land mammal! Every other land mammal there was brought by people! ❄️
They’re one of the few members of the dog family with furry feet! Their scientific name, Vulpes lagopus, actually means “hare-footed fox.” The fur helps keep their feet from freezing when they walk all day on the ice. 🥶
Arctic foxes help plant gardens! Their poop and food leftovers fertilize the soil around their dens, so a lot more plants grow there. In the summer, the bright green dens can be spotted from over half a mile away! 🌱
One fox can hide more than 1,500 eggs a year! Foxes near goose colonies steal and bury hundreds of eggs each summer. They dig them up and eat them up to a year later, using the frozen ground like a freezer. 🥚
They follow polar bears around for leftovers! In the winter, arctic foxes can trail polar bears onto the sea ice to try to eat scraps from seals the bears catch and leave behind. It can be pretty risky because polar bears can eat foxes too! 🐻❄️
They bulk up for winter! In the fall, arctic foxes can add up to 50% to their body weight. That’s the same as a 70-pound kid gaining 35 pounds before winter! 🍔
