Logic Puzzle: A farmer needs to take a wolf, a rabbit, and a carrot across a river. His boat can only carry him plus one item. If the wolf is left with the rabbit, the wolf eats the rabbit. If the rabbit is left with the carrot, the rabbit eats the carrot. How can he get all three across safely?

Solution:

There are a couple solutions. The farmer must take 7 total trips:

  1. The farmer takes the rabbit across (leaving the wolf and carrot)

  2. The farmer crosses back alone

  3. The farmer takes the wolf across

  4. The farmer crosses back with the rabbit (leaving the wolf)

  5. The farmer takes the carrot across

  6. The farmer crosses back alone (leaving the carrot with the wolf)

  7. The farmer takes the rabbit across
