BRAIN TRIVIA

Logic Puzzle: There are 3 light switches downstairs. One of them turns on an old-fashioned lightbulb in the attic upstairs. You can flip the switches as many times as you want, but you can only go upstairs to check one time. How can you figure out which switch turns on the bulb? 💡

Hint:

When a lightbulb has been on for a while, what else does it give off besides light? (You can use more than just your eyes!)

Solution:

Use the bulb’s heat!

  1. Turn on switch #1 and wait about 10 minutes.

  2. Turn switch #1 off and turn switch #2 on.

  3. Go upstairs and check the bulb.

  • If the bulb is on, it’s switch #2.

  • If the bulb is off but warm, it’s switch #1, because it was on long enough to heat up. 🔥

  • If the bulb is off and cold, it’s switch 3, which you never flipped.

Fun fact: Old-fashioned light bulbs turn about 90% of their energy into heat, not light. That’s why newer LED bulbs use way less electricity, and why this puzzle wouldn’t work with an LED, since they barely get warm! 🌡️
